 In the first step of the installation wizard, the installation address section,  any choice I choose results in an error:

Exception occurred while instializing the installation.

System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Configuration system failed to initialize.

Sorry to hear about this issue. 

Some installation issues arise if the setup.exe is not Run As Admin - can we make sure you have selected to Run As Administrator?

If that doesn't help, can you check the machine's event log (eventvwr) to see if there is any additional information? There may be some additional clues in the event viewer logs.

Also, if you could attach a screenshot of this error it would help us document it for the future. Thank you.

I was logged in as administrator when I ran setup:

 It generated 2 events in the event viewer, but neither of which seem to help.

What is your OS ?

Also, make sure IIS is configured to support ASP.NET and Windows Authentication.

Do you have pre-existing content on your IIS site which is accessible?

 I'm running windows 2003 server, IIS 6 and asp.net 2.0.50727

I'm not sure what you mean by pre-exisisting content but I've had sharepoint on here for about 2 years and also a shopkeeper site running fine. 

It looks like it did add a qdabrawebservice virtual directory to my sharepoint directory in IIS, but it still crashes with that error.
