    Unspecified error -- Help!

    Hi everybody,

OK, this is very strange. I have a large form template which I'm working on. It's a little slow loading, but I haven't had any errors before now. I saved, made a select-all font change, tried to save again, and got the following error:

InfoPath cannot cannot save this form.

    Unspecified Error

There's only one option, "OK", which I click. That brings up the Save dialog. When I click save, I'm told

A name was started with an invalid character.

The name of the form is completely alphanumeric (starts with "P"), and it's always worked before, so this is clearly not referring to it. I really have no idea of what to do, and I would appreciate your help. Note that I do have some characters with umlauts, tildes, etc. in my form which have never bothered me before, either.

I'm sure you've tried this -- but undo your font change and try to save again? What happens then? Are there any details available on any of the error messages (sometimes there is a Details button you can click that will expose more info about the error).

Hi Hilary, yes, that's what's so strange. I can undo forever (and have tried) but get the same error. There is no details button like there usually is. I did add a couple extra things besides the font change in between saves, mainly a bunch of buttons, so it would be nice not to have to redo everything. Thanks for your help!

Anything in the Design Checker? Did you rename any of your buttons? Any chance one of them has a name that starts with an invalid char?

Is IP allowing you to save your template at all? What about as source files?

Hi Hilary, thanks for your help. The DC is empty. In one of my buttons I do have "ä", because I use the Wingdings fonts to make email icons, etc. instead of images. I'll try changing and see if it helps. I may end up overwriting the file I'm working on now with an older version and figuring things out from there.

I might as well post this on this thread too: if you give buttons a label of "`" they lose all rules, conditional formatting etc., can't be copied, and eventually turn into Text Objects. Why doesn't IP like this character?

Changing "ä" doesn't help. I'm going to have to redo some work. Thank you for your help, Hilary. Is this just one of those random bugs in IP?

Well, it does seems very random, doesn't it. You weren't able to save the template at all or as source files? I'd love to look at the source files and see if we could figure out what was giving you that error.

I think you were talking about the button label, not the name, correct? I was thinking the issue may be with a button name (or a rule name, some kind of name....) not the label....

No, I couldn't save as source files. It would take a long time to figure out the problem in them anyway -- they are very, very long.

Yes, I was talking about the button label. I don't really rename rules or buttons unless I intend to use the names in code, and I don't have any code in this form. It's very strange, but I have had IP act up when I was designing big forms before (like copying conditional formatting from one field to another field). Think I should repair?

If you have random errors in multiple templates, running a repair can't hurt. You only have one version of IP installed on your machine, I trust?

That's right. I'll go ahead and repair. Note that I only ever have trouble when working with fairly complex templates. Thanks!

hi. you need to select all form and cut >save the empty form> publish. if the form published > pasts the all form and publish again
