I'm new to infopath and sharepoint, and need help setting up a request form that triggers a workflow. 

All I want to do is create a form that users fill to request IT support. 

When the request is filled out, I want a workflow to start that creates a task for the IT Department, with the information from the form. 

Any guidance will be highly appreciated.

When you can publish your form to a SharePoint form library you can choose to promote some of the fields as columns. Then, in SharePoint, you can set up a workflow to run and using the SharePoint Designer, you can use the promoted column data. In other words, your tasks can just be the rows in this library. The workflow can be extended to create SharePoint tasks when a form is created. You can do this all with the SharePoint Designer.
