Oh, it wouldn't let me attach a Word file? 

The rule should work on the qRulesLink field. Please attach your template where you've tried this so I can take a look.

 

In this form, on the qRulesLink field, you no longer have the rule to set the URL field of the GetItem data connection with the value from the field.

For this to work, you need a rule with three actions. This rule needs to be set on the qRulesLink field. The actions need to be in the order I'm putting them in below:

1. Set URL from the query fields of GetItem Data Connection to the value of qRulesLink.
2. Query with the GetItem Data Connection.
3. Set the id field = @Value[@InternalName = "ID"]

If this were my form, I'd also set a condition on the rule to run only when the qRulesLink field was not blank.

Well, I guess it was pretty dumb not to set the query field, huh??? 

It now works perfectly!  When we figure out how to use all this to meet our objectives, we will let you know.

Did you manage to use InfoPath/qRules successfully for your project? I'm about to start a project with a similar requirements. We need a way to preload/reserve a set of documents in a library. I was thinking about using InfoPath as an interface to drive the logic. Reading your post it seems that the documents can be saved but no specific metadata/filenames can be applied. Any creative ideas using InfoPath and qRules would be appreciated :-)

You can actually use qRules to write the meta data to your columns in the document library.  It would basically use 2 of the commands in qRules to accomplish this, the command to upload the file attachment to the library and then another command to write the meta data from you form you want in the SharePoint columns.
