How to change a control's visibility from another control's event

In my InfoPath form, I have a dropdown list with choices to make, and one of the choices is 'Other'.

I need to know how to create a textbox which is not visible (or disabled) by default, but ONLY if the user chooses 'Other' from the ddl, then the textbox becomes visible.

    Is that possible in InfoPath?

Hi, yes it's quite possible for that you can use "Conditional formatting" to hide your textbox if your dropdown choice is different of "other". You just have to right click on your textbox and select "Condiional foratting"

I saw that and I really wasn't sure how to get it to work - - I tried a couple of things, but just couldn't figure it out - -

After I saw your post - - I tried it again and realized I was thinking of it backwards - - make it invisible and make it visible if the ddl item was 'Other'

When I changed to 'is not equal to' 'Other', and choose 'Hide this control', it worked - -  it seems backwards to me, logic-wise, but it works - -

    thanks

One last question - - I just tried this on a datePicker control - - in Conditional Formatting, 'Hide this control' is not available - - only Read Only

Is there something I'm missing here?

Hi, you right on some control, you can't directly hide, but you can do a trick. You can add a section and insert your control on that section and make your conditional formatting on that section.

I found something really strange - - (btw - I'm using 2010, so all this is covered under rules)

when I preview this form - - all these rules work well.

However, when I publish the form, the DTP itself doesn't work. In other words, when I check the checkbox - I can't select a date from the DateTimePicker. I can type in a date, it's just that the dropdown calendar doesn't work.

Then, when I uncheck it, the DTP dims out (like I would expect a disabled control to look) . Of course, it doesn't work then either.

    1. How can I get these rules to run when the page loads?

    2. Why does this not work correctly when it's published? (is it because nothing has 'challenged' the checked/unchecked property of the checkbox?)
