    Extensible Form Template

I have a sales agent/product matrix controlling whether a sales agent can access a product.  The cell values of the matrix changes over time such that a sales agent can access more or less products. Products can be added or deleted and so are sales agents.  Each product has its own set of data (number of fields, data type and structure are different product to product).

Can I design a form template to make use of the matrix to show only the relevant product(s) and its data when a sales agent is selected in the form?  The matrix is maintained separately by a sales administrator (not part of the form).  The idea is that the form template should be designed once with extensibility to handle changes in the matrix.  That is, no additional design work is required when the sales administrator changes the matrix values or add/delete column/rows in the matrix.

I am thinking of using a template part to hold/present data of a product. Can template parts be inserted into a form template dynamically?  Can a form template/template part be referenced from a form template?  If not, is there a way I can add (or reference) a new block of data without having to re-design the form template again?

I am new to InfoPath and wonder how much of what I want to do can be done using InfoPath.  What are the options?  I appreciate very much comments and suggestions from the InfoPath community.   Thank you in advance.

    Re: Extensible Form Template

Hi and welcome to the InfoPath Dev forums.

We have developed many solutions that sound very similiar to what you are trying to do.  The key is that you want to make the form data driven, that is the system that has the master set of products sits outside of InfoPath (a SharePoint list, a database, etc) and is not hard coded or built into the form template.

We would be happy to assist you on a consulting basis if you like, we do this for customers all the time.  It might be very helpful to have us review your requirments and provide you with our recommendation before you get too deep in the form design.

You can send me a private mesage via the forums or you can visit our consulting page for more information including conact information.

    Ted
