Add DocID to InfoPath 2007 form using DBXL 2.4

I'd like to add a field in an InfoPath 2007 form which displays the DocID (the form submits to DBXL 2.4). The scenario would be that the user would click a button and the field would then be populated with the DocID, but the form would still remain open for the user to keep working in. In this post...http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/14456/51379.aspx#51379, Patrick Halstead mentions that, "In DBXL 2.4 ... this [inserting a DocID into a new form] becomes easier - we have an XTP that automatically does this".
I would appreciate any help in locating and utilizing this XTP. Thanks, Stuart

    Hi Stuart,

That XTP has not yet been released.

As mentioned in the other thread, the DocID is assigned to the xml form on submit. On an already-submitted xml, you can display the docid by accessing the PI: http://www.infopathdev.com/files/folders/other_topics/entry56225.aspx

If you want the users to be able to submit and keep the form open, please read this: http://www.infopathdev.com/files/folders/miscellaneous/entry49724.aspx

    Hope this helps.

qRules makes this whole process a breeze.  You can simply use the SubmitToDbxl command and the command returns the new form's docId.  This also takes all the complication out of resubmitting the form before it's closed.  Easy as pie.

Re: Add DocID to InfoPath 2007 form using DBXL 2.4

Thanks for your reply Ernesto. I have followed the instructions in the second of your links (Save Your Progress example) and all went well until I tried to open the form from DAT --- I received the following error message:

InfoPath cannot create a new, blank form.
InfoPath cannot open the form. To fix this problem, contact your system administrator.
    Form template: HTTP://moss.litwareinc.com/QdabraWebService/Forms/ID/290/template.xsn
InfoPath cannot open the selected form because of an error in the form's code.
One or more required components of InfoPath or the form template cannot run because of a security restriction.
Contact your system administrator or run Setup again to confirm that .NET Programmability Support is installed on your computer.

I have followed your suggest fixes in this post http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/13590/48406.aspx but I still receive the same error. Are there other troubleshooting/fixing steps you could recommend, or is the only thing left to just uninstall/re-install Office? And if it matters, my development environment is the preconfigured VHD from Microsoft that runs Windows Server 2003R2, MOSS 2007, SQL Server 2005, Office Enterprise 2007 and is a domain controller all on one machine.

Hi Jimmy - Thanks for your reply. I would like to try the qRules solution. On the Qdabra website, it states that the trial version of qRules 2.3 is "coming soon". Is there an ETA for this release, or is a trial available for qRules 2.2?

Nice job digging up some previous info. I believe those threads you found are also related to this.

Do you get a different result if you click the green arrow ("Download") button instead of the Open link?

Hi Ernesto - when I clicked the Download (green arrow) button and then choose Open, the form opens without any errors and operates just as expected. When I looked at your instructions again, you clearly state to use the Download icon, so I apologize for not following instructions and wasting your time with this post. Just for my curiosity - when using a form with code, should you always use the Download icon to test the form and not the Open link? Is there a specific reason for that? And an extra thanks to you (and Jimmy) for working on a holiday - it certainly isn't expected, but I really appreciate the help.

Re: Add DocID to InfoPath 2007 form using DBXL 2.4

    Hi Stuart,

Yes, the DAT has two options for opening forms and the Open link fails for forms with code. One future idea for DAT is to remove the Open link altogether, since the Download icon will work for all forms.

Let us know if you run into any other issues. Good luck.

Re: Add DocID to InfoPath 2007 form using DBXL 2.4

    Hello again,

qRules 2.3 will be released within the next week, but we can have a member of our team send you an advance trial copy.  Incidentally, the methods described in http://www.infopathdev.com/files/folders/miscellaneous/entry49724.aspx are intended for cases where any of the below is true:

    • You need your form to be InfoPath 2003 compatible
    • You already have code in your form
    • You will need to have code in your form in the future

In all other cases, qRules is the way to go, and the features provided by qRules should take care of most situations where code would be needed anyway.

    Regarding this:

    stuartward:
Just for my curiosity - when using a form with code, should you always use the Download icon to test the form and not the Open link? Is there a specific reason for that?

The Open link uses a feature that opens the form directly from its location, without initiating a download first, and there are certain benefits to using this.  Unfortunately, since DAT uses IP 2003 code, this feature is incompatible with any forms that use IP 2007 code, so you would need to use the download icon in that situation.

Re: Add DocID to InfoPath 2007 form using DBXL 2.4

Hi Jimmy - thanks for all the additional information. My form does have additional code in it (there is a small amount of C# to interface with an external signature pad to capture the signature in a picture control). And since this is a new project, I can imagine user requirements evolving in the future that may require additional solutions that would utilize code. So from your comments, it sounds like qRules is not something that would work in my situation? qRules has many features that I'd really like to take advantage of - do you foresee a future version of qRules that would integrate seamlessly with existing/additional code?

    Hi Stuart,

qRules v2.2 and newer allow integration with custom code.

Ernesto's right.  As of recently, qRules can now be very easily integrated with custom code, so for most situations, qRules is still the ideal option.

That's good news - I really wanted to take advantage of some of the things in qRules. So, would it be possible to get a trial version of qRules - or if the new version is coming out soon, I can wait a few days. Thanks, Stuart
