Cannot be blank in hidden sections

I have a section that is hidden unless a certain checkbox is true. How can I make the controls in this section required only when the section is visible?

You need to set the field so that it can be blank, and then write custom data validation to check if A) the field is blank AND B) the section is visible.

Right click on the field in the hidden section Find the data validation button and click it. Choose add and follow the instructions. "If check box(A) = true and field (B) is blank then fill in your screen tip and message.
