    UpdateListItem SP

How can I post just a textbox or dropdown to a list?  I can submit repeating tables (using webserivce and caml).  Would just modify the CAML?

You can use CAML to submit to a SharePoint list -- are you updating an existing item? Or adding a new item?

I am just adding a new item to SP.  My first thought was to modify the CAML but how...

So, you have a form that submits to a list already? Did you write the CAML for it? Here is a blog post on submitting list items to SharePoint using CAML in an InfoPath form....

Thank you but I know that post VERY well; It's how I started off submitting.    However I do not want to submit a repeating table to a list I want to be able to submit a textbox or a dropdown box to a SP list.

My first list is based on a repeating table.  I then create a seven row grid for each row of that repeating table and each row has a true/false control.  If that control is yes I 'unhide' a textbox allowing the user to  fill it out. The second list is based on that set of textboxes to SP.  I am attempting to understand how to submit those textboxes.

    Confusing :) ?

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to submit a textbox (instead of a repeating table to SP)?  Is it just so simple I'm overlooking it (probable)?

It is basically the same approach as having a repeating table, only simpler. Just add an XML data source to your form with the correct CAML for submitting the item to your SharePoint list. When the user fills out the text box, set the correct Field node in your CAML to the value. Then submit to the Lists web service. This thread has a CAML sample that may be helpful. You could also try qRules -- it can submit repeating or non repeating data.

    Hillary,

In your "Submit to Sharepoint List" blog you mentioned adding an optional "List Item ID" field to update the sharepoint list versus adding the item. Can you offer any detail on this? I added the field as you instructed but I'm not sure what value it needs.

     Thank you in advance.

Are you using qRules? That is the product used in the blog post for submitting items to a SharePoint list. If you are using qRules, you can add the XPath to your Id field as a parameter for the rule command, so that it will get populated with the SharePoint Id field when the items are submitted to the list -- that provides a link which will allow you to update the list items from the form.

    Yes I'm using qRules.

So just that I'm clear. I replace the parameter shown in your blog (/id=my:id) with the full Xpath to my specific ID (i.e. /my:RMADetail/my:RMAItems/my:item/my:ID).

Are you submitting repeating items? From your xpath, I'd guess "yes" -- is my:item the repeating group? If so, try my:ID. What you want to see is after submitting to your list, your ID should get populated with the ID number of the new SharePoint list item....

Using the example above I get the following error.

"Failed to select node for Sharepoint List ID"

Do I need a "receive" data connection from the SPlist as well?

  • 05-21-2010 01:18 PM In reply to

ok. I get the ID of my list item. But if I change a field after the initial submission I get a new submission. I doesn't update the item.

That definitely shouldn't be happening. Are you showing your ID in your form, so you can compare it to your SharePoint list? You don't have any other rules that might be setting that field back to blank, do you?
