Using an Infopath Form to Capture Data to Mysite Fields

    Hello,

We are wanting to create an Infopath form for our users to fill out capturing their "Skills and Knowledge (think resume, hobbies, etc)" and send that data when submitted to THEIR mysite on our Sharepoint portal. On their mysite, we are wanting to put this data in their profile, details, into "custom" fields we have added ourselves (education, groups, past reservoirs worked in, etc etc).

Is there a way to do this using Qrules, or an efficient way? What is the best practice when wanting to do something like this, or what steps would you take, etc? Help guide us a bit please :)

    Hi PriestB and welcome,

qRules can help you map InfoPath form data (XML) to a SharePoint list. Is the profile for your employees a list? If so, it would likely work. You can easily try it and see.

Best practices ... your goal is pretty simple. You'll want to make sure that other applications don't modify the SharePoint data directly, since qRules will store the forms as XML and that is the official repository (that includes manual user edits from the web page). Keeping the data store in XML is good because that allows 100% fidelity roundtripping when editing (SharePoint data types are not the same as XML and won't round trip as easily). SharePoint can be used as a nice display service. Of course, you can use SharePoint 2010 and InfoPath to map XML data to lists using out-of-the-box features, but repeating data structures and other data types aren't supported.

    Good luck!
