Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

I'm having a problem working through the "How to IPFS-enable a Codeless DBXL solution" document.

On the SharePoint tab in the DAT I enter a URL to an existing library in SharePoint, choose "Object Model" as the method and then check "Publish Library and XSN" and "Use Form Services". When I click Save I get the following error message:

S0002: Caught exception ensuring SharePoint form library http://<server>/<library>. Server was unable to process request. ---> Method 'get_ServerInfo' in type 'Microsoft.Office.InfoPath.Server.SolutionLifetime.XmlFormProxy' from assembly 'Microsoft.Office.InfoPath.Server, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c does not have an implementation.

Great! That's all very clear and straight-forward then! :-) Anyone knows what this means?

I thought that perhaps it didn't like the fact that the library already existed so I tried with a unique name but got the same response.

DBXL and SharePoint are on one server and SQL is on another if that is significant?

    Hi:

Do you have the InfoPath 2010 beta installed by any chance?

    Hi Hilary,

Yes I do. I have two test environments, one has SharePoint 2007/InfoPath 2010 the other has SharePoint 2010/InfoPath 2010. When I'm working in the SharePoint 2007/InfoPath 2010 environment I save all forms as InfoPath 2007.

Does this issue happen in both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010?

I've checked and the error doesn't appear in SharePoint 2010. It's still weird though. After I completed the SharePoint tab and clicked Save I got an error message (unfortunately didn't take note of it). I then clicked on Save again and I got a different message "COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used". I clicked Save a third time and got a "saved OK" message.

I then launched my web form from SharePoint filled it in an submitted it. I checked the database and I could see that the submit had successfully occured. Great! I then decided to launch the form a second time. On this attempt I got a message saying that the databse couldn't be contacted but when I checked I could see another new entry had been created. Finally, I ran the form again and was again able to submit - this time without any error messages.

It seems to be working but I'm not sure why I'm getting error messages....

Thanks for the info. It's interesting that the error doesn't show in SharePoint 2010!

In SharePoint 2007, we've seen some customer environments where Object Model refuses to work. When they switch to Web Service, the SharePoint mapping works nicely. Can you try that?

If you encounter any other errors, please take screenshots and, if possible, check out the eventvwr for any additional information. Perhaps those may give us further clues to determine what's going on.

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

    Hello,

I've given up trying to get it working in my SharePoint 2007 enviroment (since my live environment will be SharePoint 2010). The SharePoint tab in DBXL does appear to be very fussy though. I've managed to successfully write to my database using a form I created yesterday. Today I've created a new form and followed exactly the same procedure but now when I complete the Sharepoint tab it refuses to save. I get this error message: "S0002: Caught exception ensuring SharePoint form library. Invalid URI. The format of the URI could not be determined". The only way I can get around this message is to uncheck the "Publish library and XSN" box. Why does this work for one form and not the other though?

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

Did you have any success when switching from Object Model to Web Service in the Sharepoint mapping tab?

We have tested DBXL v2.3 with SharePoint 2007, but unfortunately SharePoint 2010 came out after DBXL v2.3 was released, so you may discover issues.

Having said that, even on SharePoint 2007, SharePoint mapping is sensitive to server conditions. This means we would need to troubleshoot specifically on your environment to determine the cause of the issue. However, if there are any errors logged in eventvwr, these might give us clues as to what may be going on.

    Thanks.

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

Hi, I'm afraid that switching to Web Service had no effect for me and the error message about "URI" still appeared. I wasn't entirely sure what I should do with the SSO field that appears (when you select Web Service) though. I ignored it but maybe it needs to be populated?

There's no real difference betwwen the first form I created (which works) and the second form I created (which doesn't). I'm considering removing the first form from the DAT to see if this makes the second one jump into life.

I've looked at the event logs and a couple of messages catch the eye. The first error says "Error occured moving template.xml to template.xsn". This would appear to be the real reason for the error message I'm getting in the DAT. It looks like the DAT is trying to find a template.xml file in SharePoint which it wants to convert to template.xsn. The other error just says "An error message occurred while setting up a SharePoint collection mapping with the administrative tool. This could be a user error. In case it is a system problem, error details have been logged".

I decided to see what would happen if I attempted to publish my form from InfoPath. This worked (I published to http://<myserver>/<mylibrary>). I then went to this library in SharePoint and created a new document. The form opened perfectly in the browser but I know that without completing the SharePoint tab in the DAT that this form will not submit to my database. In the SharePoint tab I entered exactly the same URL (ie http://<myserver>/<mylibrary>) and selected the "Publish Library and XSN" - but same message "format of the URI could not be determined".

What's the best way to use the SharePoint tab? Should the Library already exist in SharePoint for example? Should there be a template.xsn already associated with the library? Should you have no Library set up, and if this is the case does the DAT automatically create the library for you and use the attached form as the template?

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

The best way to use the SharePoint tab in DAT is to just let DAT create a new library for you.  There is no need to create the library in SharePoint first, DBXL/DAT handles that for you.

That being said the odd issue you had makes me wonder if there was something funny with the name of the library?  Did you have any spaces in the library name or any special charachters?

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

Hi Ted, I think I've tried every possible combination to get this to work. Basically it doesn't like whatever I put into the URL field of the SharePoint tab. This is my current URL:

    http://js-s02/qdabratest2

The library doesn't exist (I'm letting DBXL create it).

In my first attempt at this (which DID work) the URL was:

    http://js-s02/qbabratest

I'm ready to give up - is there anything else I can do to try and get this working? :-(

Sorry you are still having issues - I am thinking it's something simple that is missing.  Would you have time to do a Live Meeting so I can watch what you are doing?

You can email me directly so we can set that up.

    Thanks!

Re: Problem with SharePoint tab in the DAT

    Hi Ted,

Here's an update. Since SharePoint 2010 and Office Pro 2010 are now officially available via MSDN I decided to take the big step of completely trashing my test environment and rebuilding the whole thing from scratch. The first positive thing I noticed was that the strange issue I had had previously (the DAT only running if I cleared out the form cache in InfoPath) has disappeared. Yay!

However, when I got to the part of trying to save the SharePoint tab info in the DAT all my old problems resurfaced. Beating the urge to throw my laptop out of the window was very difficult at this point but I decided to think about how I'd built my test environment. Everything seemed pretty bog standard apart from one "minor" issue. When I installed DBXL I had inadvertantly been logged in as the local administrator rather than as a domain administrator. I didn't think this was particularly significant but since it was the only thing that was different about my test environment (all other programs had been installed using the domain administrator account) I decided to remove DBXL and reinstall it using the proper credentials. I then created a new form loaded it into the DAT, filled out the Database tab, before finally filling out the SharePoint tab. This time when I clicked Save I received a positive response. Double yay!

Of course I've got this far before, so I decided not to get too excited. I checked in SharePoint and found the library that DBXL had created. At this point I remembered that you had to have data connections defined in SharePoint in order for my form to work properly in the browser so I went back to InfoPath and created these. Finally I clicked New in the SharePoint library and saw my form successfully rendered in the browser. The form is pretty basic. It only requests 4 pieces of information - Username, Surname, Forename and Department. The first three fields are simple text entries but the Department field is a drop-down box which gets information from my database. I completed the form and satisfied myself that the drop-down box was indeed populated. Finally I hit submit and received a reply that my data had been successfully submitted. Triple yay!

The final check was to look at the database. Would the data really be there? I had been at this point so many times before that my expectations were virtually zero but when I checked I was greatly relieved to find out that my database had indeed been updated. Quadruple yay! DBXL is working for me!!!

Now of course I have to try and get it doing something meaningful to wow the boss and get him to spend the money on it. With only a month left before my test license runs out I'd better get a move on, plus of course this only works at the moment when I use my domain admins account. I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun (NOT!) trying to get this working for ordinary users. :-)

A few final observations to help other newbies:

Be careful if your testing involves the use of beta software (obvious point really).

Don't install DBXL using a local admin account as this seems to cause a few odd problems.

Be prepared to do a lot of reading - you'll need a reasonable knowledge of Win 2008 R2, SQL 2008, SharePoint 2010, InfoPath 2010 and IIS 7.0 even before you start thinking about DBXL. I was blissfully ignorant about this when I first asked myself the question "How can I write to my database from a browser when I have no programming experience?" The whole process has been a complete pain-in-the-butt but I feel strangely elated today. :-)

Thanks to the Qdabra guys for keeping me on track and answering my many "dumb" questions.
