Re: How to save form without submitting in InfoPath form services

Quick question, If have 2 views, should I use the same MainSubmit or create a new one for each submit button on the second view. The way I have the form is the following. Users can open the original view or (View 1), then fill it out. Once submitted, they can edit and submit without any issues to the same item, that's great. Then the internal staff, I have created a rule based on permissions that allows them to open the Admin View or (View 2), and edit items, if the request is pending, just save the form but it should not create a new item, it should save to the same item. If the request is complete, the check box is there to disable the save and enable the submit button. The submit button should close the form, but I haven't created the Read-Only view for when the form is closed because the form keeps creating a new item. I can do that later, I desperately need help on not allowing to creating a new item everytime I save or submit on the second view.

Greatly appreciated for your time and support!!

    Thank you

If you submit the XML with a new name (different time), it won't overwrite. You may want to have another column where you store "time submitted" or some such, if that is important to you - but if you want the file to overwrite, the name has to stay constant.

I'm sorry , I don't quite follow, how could I put the time on a different column. If I remove the date, then it would defenitely create a new item, wouldn't? This is how I'm storing the strfilename and date:

Here are the Set Field and Main Submit on View 1. I'm doing the same thing in View 2. But how can I move the time?

Then on the data source I do the following: concat(strFilename, now())

What can i do on View 2 so it would not overrite the first item submitted?

I'm sorry, I simply don't understand. Do you want to overwrite the existing XML or not?

    Hi Hilary,

Yes, I want to save but not change the item or create a new one, just keep the original item with username and time to be the same. So, when if saved, open the file and see the changes.

This is a great post - exactly what I was looking for.

I am not very familiar with java script, though.  Can you show me exactly where you would input your site and form template information?

    Thanks very much!

So, what did you do to figure it out? I am dealing with a similar issue. It seems that "save" prompts the user to manually enter a new name for the form....which creates a new form.
