Data disappearing from email when InfoPath form forwarded

Over the past 2 weeks we've had a few complaints from users in regards to InfoPath forms which are emailed.  The forms were setup with the Submit Options to "Send only the active view with no attachments" and seems to break somewhere in the fowarding of the actual email.

Scenario #1: The form was submitted by User A from the web via email to user B.  User B forwarded the email to User C saying they approved the request.  User C forwarded the request back to User A saying they approved the request.  When User A received the string of emails back with the approvals, the data from the form was "missing" from the email body.  The actual text from the fields along with the title of the field was stored in individual .htm attachments to the email.  (ie. ATT00001.htm - ATT00021.htm)

Scenario #2: The form was submitted by User A from the web via email to User B.  User B forwarded the email to User C saying they approved the request.  User C forwarded the email to User D saying they approved the request.  User D replied back to User C saying they approved the request.  Somewhere along the line the email string broke and the body of the email no longer showed the actual text entered from the form...instead it started showing things such as [cid:[email protected]] and [cid:[email protected]].

Has anyone seen anything like this??  It doesn't appear to be a frequent thing, but has happened on at least 3 forms that I am aware of and with different users.  I've tried myself to replicate the issue and have not been successful in my attempts.

The fields on the form are mostly just Text Boxes but there are a few Data Pickers as well.  It's impacting every control on the form.

Are all the users using Outlook 2007 when this occurs?  Could it be that one of the users is using a mobile device and when they reply it is removing some of the information.  This seems to happen with other Outlook messages that have embedded MS Office objects.

Has the same person or persons been invovled in the 3 forms that this happened with?

Yes, we use Outlook 2007 in our company.  I'm trying to find out more details as to if any of the users were using their Blackberry to forward the email.  Once I hear some further detail from the users, I'll post up that information.  I'm also trying to figure out exactly at what point the email appears to have broken and if it looked normal in the Sent items of the person who last forwarded it.

No, it hasn't been the same person/people involved in the 3 differnet forms.  It has been different users.

I just heard back from the last of the users in Scenario #2.

User B was using the Outlook 2007 client at work and her email looked 'normal'.  User C was using the Outlook 2007 client at work and her email looked 'normal' as well.  User C was using the Outlook Web Access (OWA) client while connected via VPN from home when she replied to the email.  This is where the problem came into play.

We have tried to replicate this issue though and haven't been successful.  Any ideas?

Yeah, it sounds like OWA is what introduced the problem.  It may have something to do with OWA & forwarding vs. replying.  Also, could it be OWA on Firefox vs. OWA on IE potentially causing the issue here?  Sounds like a hard issue to repro unfortunatley.

I just confirmed with the user that she was using OWA thru IE8 when she replied to the email.  (Scenario #2)  Very hard to debug considering I've tried the exact same thing and was not able to replicate the issue.

I wonder if there is an image setting in IE8 that impacts OWA?  Did she mention if she noticed that the images got turned to the ID's when she replied?  She may not remember but I wonder if her local settings in IE impact.
