    Problem with Digital Signatures

Hi guys, longtime viewer of this board, but first time I believe I've ever posted.

We have about a dozen infopath forms in production at my company.  Most are on sharepoint, but I don't believe this is a sharepoint problem.  Here is what we're seeing.  We have, for the purpose of explaining this problem easier, an invoice transmittal form that 6 people sign in sequence.  They all have company issued digital certificates and the root server is in the trusted servers, so they all show valid (versus the big ugly "invalid signature" that I'd love to learn how to turn off).  So we are going along happy for a few months, then one day all currently open forms and all closed forms all of a sudden go "invalid" on every signature that was present and signed after.  New forms show no invalid, but the damage is done, all signatures on all the previous forms, when "opened", show that there seems to be no digital certificate "attached" to them, making them invalid.  I can even click on the link that shows a screenshot of the form when they signed it and it shows they are all valid, but looking at the actual form, they are invalid.

I don't want to throw off any good brainstorming by my theory, but I am thinking it may be because of a recent form update?  I've made many updates in the past, and this update was just as simple, adding a repeating section to attach supporting documentation, so I really can't believe that adding this one extra section made the form remove all the certificates, but it's all I have to go with right now.

    PLEASE HELP!!!

I should also add that I do get a popup when opening the form saying that if I upgrade the form it may invalidate the signatures, and regardless of whether I click yes or no, it still invalidates them.

    Re: Problem with Digital Signatures

I hope you get an answer to this because I've had something very similar happen with mine as well.  My forms started getting ugly when I upgraded the form template as well, however with mine it essentially corrupted the whole form meaning any form that had a digital signature on it when I did the upgrade to the new template would no longer open in any way shape or form...I couldn't even take it down locally and force it open with the IP client, or any other app for that matter.

Occassionally I see the invalid digital signature now, and to get around it I open the form in the IP client and remove the signature that is giving the problem, save it and move on with life.  No clue what causes it and it's very random.

    Re: Problem with Digital Signatures

Karen, I did have a little success with the problem, although it's more of a work around.  I simply turned the automatic form upgrade off in the Form Options.  This has successfully kept the form from upgrading on existing forms and removing the certificates.  The downside obviously is that any addition to the form will not make it's way into existing forms.  I'll continue to turn form upgrade off on all new forms until I find a better solution, I suggest anyone with digital signatures do the same.

    Re: Problem with Digital Signatures

I published a form update to a SharePoint form library, where all of the documents had been digitally signed (InfoPath 2007).

Whenever I tried to open any of the previously signed forms, I received this message "There was an error in the custom validation code"

I resolved this problem by changing the Default Value of fields in the form's section of signed data.  I used rules on form open or otherwise that would only set the default value if the form was not yet signed.  In effect, this will only set (or change) values on fields if the form has not yet been signed.  It seemed as though the default value logic was trying to set form values after the signature had been applied.

The Tools > Logic Inspector tool was helpful in seeing which fields had default values.

In the field's properties, there is also the checkbox in the Default Value section: Update this value when the result of the formula is recalculated.  It seems as though this could by helpful in solving this problem too, but I never had any luch with it when I tried.

    Hopefully this helps

Hey I was just curious if you ever found an answer to this?  You and me are in the same boat.  The digiSignatures are a large part of the system I am building but it is just so flakey.....I am concerned about some of what you stated.  Are there some better resources that you know of?  I am also confused a bit about this whole CA role.

Thank you so much.  You could feel free to forward over to my regular email at [email protected]
