Infopath forms in library will not open in browser

    Hello everyone!

I have Infopath form library with several views in one Sharepoint site. There is edit icon for each item in the library in every view along with many other fields. When I click the edit icon in the default view, the form is opened in the browser. But when I choose a different view and click on edit icon, a message window pops up asking if I want to open the form in Infopath or save it. I don't want users to edit the form in Infopath, I want them to edit directly in the browser. I can't find what triggers this behavior. Did anybody face this problem before and does anybody know how to make the edit icon open the forms in the browser? I'm not even sure if it is related to Infopath forms too, sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

    Thanks a lot in advance!!!

I recommend that instead of using the Edit icon, use the Type field, which shows the InfoPath icon.  People will not get a context menu nor an edit button, but rather a simple InfoPath icon to click on.  When they click it, it will always open in the browser as long as the form library is set to default to browser mode.

As an aside, it does seem strange that in other views, the exact same Edit button tries to open the InfoPath client.  I have not encountered that before, but I also don't ever use the Edit button in my form libraries.

I just saw that default view has Type field, but the rest views have Edit field for the same Infopath icon. I want to change Edit to Type but I donno how. I went to "Modify this view", there it only shows "Name" property where I can change only .aspx page name. There is no Sort, Filter, Group properties. But when I go to "Modify this view" in default view there is every property. I wonder if these views were custom view created in SPD?

You don't change "edit" to "type."  You simply go into each view and select the Type column and deselect the Edit column.

All of the stuff you mentioned does show up in every view when modifying it.  If you see nothing, then you have a problem with your system.  If you didn't create the views, then who built all of it if you are managing it?

I don't see all properties and I don't know why. These views are old. Somebody made them long time ago and I can't understand how to edit them. Do you know how to customize views in SPD?

You can only customize views in SPD for 2010.  In 2007, the only thing you can do with SPD is create custom data views, but those aren't list/library views.

I suggest creating NEW views that show the same fields as the old views that are wierd, and then try to delete the old views and use the new ones that have the Type field instead of Edit.  Honestly, based on what you've described, I'm thinking that it's not the Edit button causing this issue, but rather the nature of these strange views that is causing it.  I've never heard of what you're describing, so I have no idea how it happened.  Views don't have permissions, so it's not like you are being restricted from their settings.  They must be customized or created in some way I've never heard of.

Thank you Clayton for your suggestion. I deleted those views and recreated them from the ground. Maybe they were created in SPD somehow, but I don't know how. I opened them in SPD before deleting and couldn't find where to modify and correct the Edit field, not very knowledgable about SPD. Happy New Year!!!

Yeah, you can only do that in 2010, so I wouldn't have expected you to find anything.  It was probably very easy to make new ones in the main interface that work as expected, so glad it's resolved.
