Can't Update the Form Template in Existing Doc Library

I have designed a InfoPath template in Visual Studio. I have some c# for populating a drop down with user names from SharePoint. It checks as compatable with Infopath 2003.

I published this template to a new Document Library from VS no problem. But when I try to UPDATE that same library template it fails with the error...

InfoPath cannot save the following form: http://myURL/sites/MySite/MyFormLibrary
This document library was either renamed or deleted, or network problems are preventing
the file from being saved. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

I've spent days on this. Arrgh!

I can delete the whole library and recreate it during publish, but never update.

I have full Admin rights. This is for InfoPath 2003, using Visual Studio 2005, and SharePoint 2003 (No Form Services. No Content Types.)
Note: the server has an annoying and slow CITRIX envolvement, so that for users filling out forms the InfoPath app runs in Citrix.

Update takes longer than submit. Probably the server is just timing out.

It doesn't feel like a timeout to me, but if so I don't see how its even usable. It has never once worked.

Is there a way to publish it locally and sync the template using SharePoint Designer? I tried to do this but when the form is opened there is a quick flash of a dialog saying something about updating... and I get served the old original form.

You can try to manually upload the template to the hidden Forms folder of the library - be sure to use the filename of template.xsn.  The publishing process just overwrites the template.xsn file anyway while also embedding a URL reference back to the library in each XML form that is created.  Though this may work, it's not the suggested means of moving forward.

It would be best to see if you can update any form anywhere.  Can you try just creating a blank InfoPath form template using InfoPath itself, publish it, then try to update it?  The error you're getting is also something I associate with network timeouts.  I once had a client where I struggled mightily to update my form templates due to timeout issues.

I created a new blank form in InfoPath. Published it to a new document library. Then I made a minor change and tried to update that same library. Same issue appeared.

In the mean time I've been doing the local publish and upload workaround, which works fine enough.

Then I discovered another similar issue.

The documents created with this Infopath form ALSO cannot be updated after they are submitted. The error I get when trying to edit an existing document in Infopath is...

This form cannot be filled out because you do not have adequate permission, another user has the form open, or the form is open in another program.

Do you want to open a read-only copy of the form?

This sounds suspiciously like my template issue. Certainly no one else has the document open. I have full admin. This happens regardless of whether I check out the document prior to editing or not. BUT if I set the library up to use versioning this does NOT happen. See? I can always post, but never update - both with templates and documents.

Note that the document lock seems to time out after a long while and I can edit it ONCE. The lock on the template does not. I can never update a library template via publish.

    Weird.

There's nothing that I know of in SharePoint that will lock the Form Template update based on the template.

Did you check the SharePoint server logs? Might be that your SharePoint needs a new service pack or there's some anomaly with it.

Of course, I'm assuming you are using the same account to update as the account that you used to do the initial publish. If not, it's probably a permission issue.

BTW, SharePoint locks default to 10 minutes.

Re: Can't Update the Form Template in Existing Doc Library

    Hi BrianPMucha,

I face the exactly same problem while updating the template or while trying to edit a form in my library. Did you find  the root cause and the solution for it?

Earlier when i had received a similar kind of issue, i went to SharePoint Designer's  "All files" and there i could see that the template was checked out. But this  time, i can't see the file being checked out.

    Your help is appreciated.

    Regards,

    Manisha

Hey Manisha, I honestly can't recall how this all worked out. Coincidentally I'm  supposed to update this project in the near future. If anything rings a bell, I'll come back and post.

    Good luck.
