    Form Versions

I have a question regarding form templates and versions. For example, let's say I have an InfoPath form with 3 fields on it. A First name, middle name and last name. Users have been filling this form out for years and they submit it to a SharePoint document library. Say a year later this form changes and it only collects 2 fields. A first name and last name. Users continue to fill out this form and submit it to the SharePoint document library. If I browse to the SharePoint document library and open up the old form it won't show the original data with the 3 fields. It will use the new template with the 2 fields. This makes sense. But I would like the old forms to open with the old template and the new forms to open with the new template. How is it possible to achieve this?

Then publish the new form template as a content type and add it to the form library.  You then have two content types (default and custom), so then forms open with whatever template their associated with.  You turn off the old default template in your content type settings so that new forms can only have the new template, but old forms can still use the old form template.  If you already overwrote the default template, then you'd need to first re-publish the new template as a content type, add it to the form library, and associate all new-style existing forms to the new content type.  Then, re-publish the OLD form template directly to the library, which will overwrite the default template so that all remaining OLD forms will show the old style.  However, if you've already overwritten the default template, you may have lost that old data.
