    Slow form, access database

I have an access database and InfoPath 2003 forms to enter information. When the database was "new" InfoPath seemed to work just fine, but after one month of use, with no too many records in the tables yet, the capture is extremely slow. As InfoPath is new for me, there is a lot of room for improvement. I tried to make the forms without code because I just don't know how to write code; maybe it is time to start coding.

I already searched the web, but I can't find any code that I can adapt to this situation.

The forms are for inventory control, and these are the main reasons why I think the forms are too slow:

1.- I use several secondary sources to retrieve information needed to capture but some sources need to be re-query each time the form is submitted to get the latest information, the queries are for complete tables, when usually just one record is needed.

2.- Basically the main source is like this

Table 1: item, location, inventory, ......
Table 2: item, location, quantity, .....

Each time the form is submitted,

    - The inventory field in Table 1 is modified: Inventory + Quantity
    - One or several records are added to the Table 2. (It can limited to just one record)

I think that it would be a lot faster if the main source is just

    Table 1: item, location, inventory,....
and have some code to add records to table 2.
This way each time there is a query in the main source just one record is retrieved from access

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Whatever values you required put try to merge them in one table, So that you will require one data connection and also while creating data connection check only those column which you require. Because no. of data connection , no. of rules at Open & Save , Rich text control hampers the performance.

    Re: Slow form, access database

I already tried that, but still slow. For example, if I capture a receipt, I query the main source for the Item ID, and using rules and conditional formatting the form displays information from the secondary sources about that item (for example Open Purchase orders, can not capture a receipt with no open orders), after the form is submitted, the secondary source changes (open orders changed for that item), and need to re-query the secondary source after form submission.

The actual process, once the form is open, is:

    1. Enter Item ID
    2. Query main source
    3. With rules or conditional formatting, show information from secondary sources related to item ID
    4. Enter information
    5. Submit form
    6. Re-query secondary sources that changed
    7. Enter a new Item ID and repeat the process

I think it would be faster if the process is:

    1. Enter Item ID
    2. Query main source and secondary sources for only that item (no the complete tables)
    3. Enter information
    4. Submit form
    5. Enter a new Item ID and repeat the process.

With this process there are fewer records to retrieve from access, less rules, less conditional formatting. Is it possible?

     Thanks

    Hi,

Why dont you use managed code for this, this will be easier and faster in managed code.

    Re: Slow form, access database

    Hi

I want to use code, but I don't have any idea of how to code.

I am new with InfoPath,  I even didn't know that there was an application called InfoPath three months ago. Took me lots of time and searching to learn how to make the forms.

When I search for something that can help me to do this, I just can find the answer: "It can not be done without code", but I can not find sample code that I can adapt. The only coding experience I have is with VBA in Excel.
