I know this should be soooooo simple, so I even hate asking

I have recently upgraded my WSS 3.0 server to MOSS.  I have been using Infopath forms for a long time now, and am really interested in being able to leverage browser based forms.  And for the most part it's pretty straight forward.  But for some reason I cannot get the email functionality to work.  I have create a SUPER simple form, even gave it full trust, uploaded it, activated it, and have used that form in the Library I have setup.  But for some reason I cannot get the form to send an email.

Seriously all that is in the form is two test fields; one with my email address called sendTo, and the other with Now() called emailBody.  I have the Email Data connection use the sendTo field for the To address, and the emailBody for the Subject line.  When I hit the button that fires this rule, all I get is: "An error occurred while the form was being submitted."  I can submit the Form to SharePoint successfully if I add the SharePoint submit data connection to the list of Actions the button performs.

So what am I missing here?  I have verified outbound email setup is working for the Farm.

    Thanks,

    Nate

Are you sure the email address is valid?  If you're 100% sure it is, then attach your XSN using the Options tab and let us see it.  This is very simple, so it shouldn't take long to figure out.

Also, are you certain that outgoing email is configured on the SharePoint server?

Email is configured as I get emails for other things, like Workflows or Discussion board updates.

OK, I added the template.  Many thanks!

The first thing I did was preview it, put in my email address, and click the button.  In preview mode, which rich client mode, it pops up a window asking if I want to send an email to the specified recipient with the specified subject using Outlook, which is my default mail client.  I click yes, and the email showed up right away with the sender being my Outlook default account.  The form was embedded in the email as expected and had the proper info.

I then published it to my SharePoint site, opened it in the browser, and again put in my personal email address.  No prompt this time, and the email showed up right away, but this time the sender was the email address specified in the Outgoing email settings of Central Admin.  In order to properly publish it as a browser form, I published it to a doc lib instead of administrative approval, which required setting it back to Domain trust, which could only be done by de-selecting the checkbox for making it viewable by mobile devices.  Did you have that checked on purpose?

    Anyway, both scenarios worked.

Well this is starting to become a bit maddening!  Through preview it works, but not via Browser form.  I suppose this means that SharePoint is incapable of sending the email then.  Weird since I get other emails.

Well thank you for testing this, at least I am troubleshooting the right thing now!

    So I figured it out...

I had email working through my Exchange server to external addresses (which I am testing with since Sharepoint and Exchange are in a seperate domain), however, all the Users in AD there also have corresponding Contact objects that they send copies to.  So in truth it's Exchange sending to the outside.  This is important since in this scenario it the SMTP service on the Sharepoint server that is trying to Relay through Exchange to external SMTP address, and it wasn't on the list of allowed Relays.

It woud have been REALLY friggin helpful if M$ could have given me the NDR code, or logged something in the Event log, or SOMETHING to point out that this was all down to Relay restrictions on Exchange.  Doh!

Thanks for the assist as I was wasting alot of time fiddling with the form!
