    Multiline text boxes

I have a problem trying to limit a multiline text box to a specific size.  Is there a way to turn off expand to show all text? I need to limit the size of the box so the form prints out a specific size.  The form has to look a certain way and can not have the text box epand to show all text or have scroll bars.  I have tried using a rich text box also.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

If you open the Text Box Properties, on the Display tab you can set the Scrolling drop-down value to "Show Scroll Bar When Necessary". This will prevent the box from expanding, but will cut off any text (in print) that doesn't fit into the box.

Thanks but I was hoping to limit the text and size of the text box a different way.  I don't want to allow the user to keep typing and get the scroll bars.  Is there any other options that you can think of that limits the size of the box and doesn't expand or get scollbars?

    Thanks for your help.

You can limit the amount of characters a user can enter using data validation. Would that meet your requirement?

It might but I am not sure exactly how to do that.  How would I find out how many characters could fit in a multiline text box.  Also can you give me the steps to do it using data validation.  I am not sure if I am doing it correctly. Thanks

The easiest way would be to type in the box until it is full, then copy the text to Word to get a character count. And actually, you wouldn't need to use data validation at all -- although that would be nice for your users, so they can see why they can't type anymore -- but you can just set a limit under the text box properties, at the bottom of the display tab. You can add data validation to the field -- the condition would be that the field does not match the pattern .{0,250} for example, if 250 was the maximum characters you wanted to allow.

Thanks, this might be my only option but I am just not sure how many characters to limit them to.  It depends if the have caps lock on and some characters are bigger than others.  I thought there would be other people that have forms that have to look identical to the hard copy and so there would be an easier way.  This form has to look exact.  It can't print out bigger or have scroll bars.

Hmmm.... not quite sure that would work.  Font width has a bit to do with it.  I just ran a quick test, and 59 M's (capital 'm') take up the same amount of space as 138 i's (small 'i').  Not to mention, line breaks will most certainly trigger a vertical scrollbar before a reasonable character count is hit.

I'm looking for a similar solution as the original post is.  As my search continues, my confidence runs low.
