Submit Button Error Message on Browser Form

We are testing a new SharePoint extranet site that publishes InfoPath form data (from a browser form) to a SharePoint Library. The form has a submit button to submit the data. Everything works fine if the user is within our network (an internal user), but when we test it (fill out a form and press "Submit") from outside of the network we get the following error:

"An error occurred while processing the form. This might be due to a problem in the form’s design. The last changes made to the form have been lost.

An editing action referred to a field or control that cannot be found in the current view."

Has anyone seen this error before on InfoPath Forms Services 2007? What is the solution??

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Did you add a button control to the form or are you using the submit button that is automatically displayed at the top and bottom of the page on the left side? I have  had similar issues and resolved it by using the built in web form submit button rather than adding a button control to the form.

I added a button control. I used a button control so that I could use a Rule to change to another view of the page after the data is submitted. And this all works fine for users within our network, but not for the public users. Only the public users get the error message.

You can do the same thing in the browser standard button control. I would try that and see if it makes a difference. In your form in design mode go to Tools > Form Options > Category: Browser. Check the Submit box and click ok.

Now go to Tools > Submit Options and write the same rules you did for the button you added to the form yourself.

Also, could you paste the rule you wrote here so I can take a look to see if there is anything in there that would cause this to happen for an external user?

Try making the above changes and publishing again and see if it makes a difference.

I took your advice but it still isn't working. I deleted the button control and rules for now, reactivated the tool bar submit button, and republished the form. Again, I was able to submit the form successfully internally, but when I try it remotely from my home computer I get an error message.

Here is the link in case you would like to try it: https://vpfnexternal.tamu.edu/sites/travel/default.aspx - you will have to register, but it is a short registration form, requires a you to create a complex password (see instructions on registration page).

"An editing action referred to a field or control that cannot be found in the current view"

That is your problem right there. Can you write out what the rule looks like?

I don't think the rule is the problem as I deleted it in the last step when I got rid of the button control. I do not have a rule now and now I have a simpler error message - "An error occurred while the form was being submitted."

Ohhhh...do the external users have add permissions for that document library that the button is submitting to? I had the same issue with users and discovered that it was because they did not have the permissions needed to submit to the data to the document library. With your internal users you probably have them in a group that has the permissions, but with externals they probably don't have the permissions to add data to the document library which is why you are getting the error message. The permissions can be contribute, add, etc. but no read capability to they cannot view any of the data in the library that others have submitted...

All external users are put into a Sharepoint Group with 'contribute' permissions, so I don't think this is the problem either. If I use my external account to login on a computer within the network, then everything works fine.... but when I use that same account from my home computer then I get the error message. Also, a professor on campus, an external user that is helping us test this, also gets the error message. So maybe it is somekind of firewall or SSL certificate issue?

Damn...in that case it has to be...There may be some workaround to this in the Central Administration Tool.

I am getting the same error message.  I have an Infopath form that is designed to be filled out on a Sharepoint server so that people who do not have Infopath will still be able to fill it out.  This form works except in the following case:

I have a repeating section for following up on the issue in the form.  When my user adds a section and fills out the fields, I get the error.  If my user just adds the section and saves, it works fine.  Then he can open the form again and enter the information in the newly created section.  It is a work around for the time being, but I would really prefer he be able to add the section and enter the follow up information in one session.  Any ideas why this would be generating the error?

     Thank you for your help.

    David,

Do you have any hidden controls in your form?  I was able to get my form to work by simply removing the conditional format that hides the Follow up repeating section.  My logic being that the section should not have to be visible if there is no follow up.  I noticed, however, that when I added a follow up, it would add to the second repeat of the repeating section.  Since the first instance was hidden, I can only assume that the program would find fault with this.

Removing that conditional format, allowed the form to work for me.

Re: Submit Button Error Message on Browser Form

No, my problem was not related to any controls or conditional formatting. As it turns out it was something very simple that I overlooked. I had an absolute path to the Infopath form, and as soon as I changed it to a relative path then users from both the default zone and the extranet zone were able to submit the form. I'm still kicking myself over that one. I apologize for not posting my solution sooner. For example I had the hyperlink to open the form as something like:

    https://vpfninternal.tamu.edu/sites/travel/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XsnLocation=https://vpfninternal.tamu.edu/sites/travel/Travel%20Forms/Forms/template.xsn&SaveLocation=https%3A%2F%2Fvpfninternal%2Etamu%2Eedu%2Fsites%2Ftravel%2FTravel%20Forms&Source=https%3A%2F%2Fvpfninternal%2Etamu%2Eedu%2Fsites%2Ftravel%2FTravel%2520Forms%2FForms%2FAllItems%2Easpx&DefaultItemOpen=1

and so I just had to make it a relative path by chopping off the first part of the path up to /sites so now it looks like this:

     /sites/travel/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XsnLocation=https://vpfninternal.tamu.edu/sites/travel/Travel%20Forms/Forms/template.xsn&SaveLocation=https%3A%2F%2Fvpfninternal%2Etamu%2Eedu%2Fsites%2Ftravel%2FTravel%20Forms&Source=https%3A%2F%2Fvpfninternal%2Etamu%2Eedu%2Fsites%2Ftravel%2FTravel%2520Forms%2FForms%2FAllItems%2Easpx&DefaultItemOpen=1
