    How do you get the contact selector to work?

    I am creating my first workflow. I need to pass round a form to various people to action and then return to the person who created it to begin with.

    I have read the instructions for the contact selector however I cannot get it to work. When I drag the control onto the form I am prompted to select a data source, however I am only able to select the main datasource as the list is disabled. I tried adding in a resource file with the structure detailed here http://blogs.msdn.com/infopath/archive/2007/02/28/using-the-contact-selector-control.aspx

    But I can't select it as the datasource for the contact list.

    The form is a database form and the examples I have found are not for that type of form, Which I guess makes a difference.

    Help please, feel free to make the instructions as basic as you want.

    You have to make the gpContactSelector group in your main data source, which is what you drag to the canvas.  You don't drag the control, but rather the gpContactSelector group and then you choose the Contact Selector control when prompted..  If your form was built initially on the database schema, then the main data source is probably locked.  That can be changed via the main XSD or XSN (need my notes from the Qdabra Mastering Infopath class), and then it might work, but I haven't tried it.

    The XML file is only for pointing to your site for user resolution - I'm not sure what you were trying to do with it.

    I have now successfully got the contact selector onto the form, and it will search the list of contacts, however when I select a contact, then click add, then OK it either just does not add any name to the To box on the form or it crashes.

    Check your syntax on the Contact Selector fields - they have to be exact.

    this is the structure I have added

    <gpContactSelector>
      <person>
        <DisplayName></DisplayName>
        <AccountId></AccountId>
        <AccountType></AccountType>
      </person>
    </gpContactSelector>

    I dragged the group onto the form in the way you described (I forget exactly what I had done previously), now although it does not crash, when I click OK the email box is greyed out and no value entered

    I have my contact selector set up correctly, but when I drag it over to the form, I do not get prompted for the Contact Selector Active X control.  I added it as a Custom control.

    Rejoyce, what do you mean when you say you drag "it" over to the form.  What are you dragging?  The way you wrote this, it seems as if you're dragging the Contact Selector control itself over to the form canvas, but if you're doing this, then I don't understand why you would expect to get prompted with anything.  Doing that would just drop an unbound Contact Selector on the form.

    If you meant that you are dragging your Contact Selector GROUP from the main data source to the form canvas and aren't seeing the Contact Selector option, then my guess is that you're dragging the wrong thing.  If you have configured the Contact Selector custom control to work in your form, then you should see it as an available option when you drag the gpContactSelector group over (or whatever you named it).  Don't drag the repeating Person group, but rather the non-repeating group above Person.

    Re: How do you get the contact selector to work?

    I have what I imagine is a totally basic question for infopath and sharepoint however... I can't spend any more time banging my head against the desk.

     I've followed the suggestions and methods discussed on how to setup the control group and retrieve data connection.  The contact selector has been added to my form and the Context.xml file to my computer however everytime I try to search I just get "search failed" and no names are available to pick.  I've tried changing the server path in the Context.xml file to be the root of the sharepoint site as well as the document library site (everywhere inbetween too).  Nothing has seemed to connect to the active directory.

     What am I looking for as the servername?  Am I including an extra "/" or something?

    Thanks for your help,
