I created a form and added data validation rules to several fields. I did not click the "cannot be blank" box but it appears merely adding a rule makes the field required. Is there a way for me to keep the validation rule when the person completing the form uses the field but allow the field be blank when they don't? 

What does your data validation say?  It's not that the field is required but that your data validation rule makes null invalid.  You need to allow null.

It labels the field with a required field red asterik. I tried writing a data validation rule that makes null allowable but the red asterik is still there.  I'm not certain how to make null allowable without confusing the person completing the form - maybe I just type a clarification statement in the header or something?  Maybe I'm not creating the correct rule to make null allowable?

Your data validation needs to contain a condition for the field being blank, so something like: Field 1 is not blank AND your original validation condition.

OR vs AND bites me sometimes too, especially once I'm looking at negatives! Glad it is working for you now.
