Populating form data from another source

I have a repository of XML data that exists in a legacy system. I'd like to be able to pull data from this repository into a form that I have created. There is a one-to-one mapping of fields and structure to the XML in the repository. I have also tested that CREATING data from the form results in XML data that is exactly the same as what is in the repository. Also, every document in the XML repository has a serial number.

I can pass the serial number to the form via the URL, and I have a web service that can pull the XML out of the repository given the serial number. So, if I extend the onLoad or similar event in a form to get the serial number off of the URL, call out to the web service, and get the XML data back, the remaining question is how do I map the data to the fields on the form?

Can I just assign the data object via the XPath, or do I have to map each field one-by-one? Has anybody done this type of work before?

    Thanks!

If your schema matches exactly (including namespaces) then you should be able to just replace the existing root node with the root node of your outside XML source.
