    Please help, Sharepoint list overwrite?

Hi, I have a question/problem using Sharepoint 2010 and Infopath 2010, any help would be appreciated. I have a table (list) that exists on Sharepoint 2010 which contains basic information entered by an associate (a person's name, address, phone, etc.). When I view this table in Sharepoint (on the top toolbar) there is an Infopath button which allows you to customize the list using Infopath. Upon clicking the button, the list gets turned into an Infopath form which I am able to create combo boxes that display the data from this table, and ultimately add a new entry via the Submit button. This works great. However, the problem arises when a manager needs to use an Infopath form to look up these entries and edit/comment on them, then save them so it will overwrite that particular row in the table stored on Sharepoint. A real world scenario would go like this: Associate enters an entry into the table (Joe Smith, 123 Some Street, etc.) and clicks submit. This creates a new entry/row in that table (Sharepoint list) and arbitrarily gives it an ID number (column ID let's say this entry was number 500). I want to be able to have a manager use a form to look up this recent entry and when they make their adjustments/comments, clck Submit and ID entry number 500, Joe Smith, gets updated with the recent comments from the manager. Instead I get ID column number 501 , and the same information (Joe Smith) plus the new comments. Essentially a duplicate entry but with the new comments added. I want the form to overwrite ID number 500 to what the manager changes it to on this list/table in Sharepoint. Is that possible? Please let me know. Thank you.

So, when the person opens the list item to edit it - they don't get the same form?

Hi, Thanks for replying. I created two Infopath forms based off of the Sharepoint list. By clicking the Infopath icon on the top of the toolbar in Sharepoint 2010, it built a form based on that list/table, and gave it a "send and receive" connection that is unable to be modified/edited (Standard procedure so far right?). Now, I took that form and turned it into one that an associate can enter basic information to the table/list stored on Sharepoint and another form for a manager to look up the recent entry and add comments/corrections. In order for the manager to find the correct entry I used the technique where a unique identifier (Entry ID - which is a random serial number we enter) is selected from a Drop Down - which will then auto fill every other text box on this manager's form. So the manager would open it, find the newly entered Entry ID number - and then all the info from the table/Sharepoint list populates (name, address, etc. etc.) and this works perfectly. Now I want the manager to enter their comments, and be able to put this updated data back onto that same row in the Sharepoint list/table that is brought up from the form. My co worker said "It sounds like Infopath brings up this data, and is treating it as a new entry - maybe there is a way to convince it that you are working to update an existing entry". Some other information: When I created these two forms... I made the associate's one (where you enter new info and submit it to the table/list). Then I just clicked Copy and paste on that Infopath File - renamed it appropriately, and then in Design mode, rebuilt it to include more fields to edit/submit back to the site (or try to). The form the person opens to make these new edits - is a different form, yes. I also have another version of this where it's just one Infopath file where these forms exist as different views. That behaves the same way - when you submit using that manager's part, it thinks it's a new entry and I get a duplicate row with extra comments, etc. entered from the manager. Is there a way that I can get Infopath to treat this data it pulls up based on the "send" connection which works fine - to submit it in that same row and overwrite it? I publish it to the site and that doesn't do anything, and the submit button just enters that info again into a new row with the extra comments, etc. Oh one more thing, I am testing this using the F5 or Preview button, as well as uploading the Infopath file (s) to the site and clicking on the file icon - that brings up the Infopath viewer program where my results are the same. I have tested this method using Submit, and Publish - not the Update feature. Thtat's about all I can think of, let me know whatever information you would like me to check on and I will be happy to relay it back - thanks!

So, the manager isn't just selecting an item from the list, they are opening your form for new items and you've provided them with a way to find a given item? I suppose you could try to make sure the list item ID field is set and see if that would work...
