InfoPath form 600+ fields and Property Promotion to SharePoint list

I have developed an extensive InfoPath - browser enabled form for my client - 600 + fields. It is a form that is saved to a sharepoint form library. They have SharePoint 2010 (2010 SharePoint server - enterprise edition).

Tthis form is quite large (600 + fields), I call it my Selections Form. How I am developing it as an end user is:

    1. The form is filled out, so that the information obtained from this form will be brought into a sharepoint list (by property promotion)

    2. Then this data is pulled into another form I that is created when the selections form is completed- for work orders driven by what is selected in the 'Selections Form'.

However, after so many property promotions, it is giving me an error when I publish the form to the sharepoint site. "Cannot update library or list".

Is there a limit on the number of property promotions from an InfoPath form? I will need all the fields to be promoted and used in a sharepoint list for all of my other forms (work orders) to work properly and be beneficial to my client.

I thought the number of columns in a list is like 4,000, so it should not be a limitation there....

Maybe in the data connection? or allowed data connections?

    PLEASE HELP!

Thank you for a quick response,

Promoted columns is different than regular columns on the list.  I also believe the limit is much lower for promoted fields.

Here is an article that may help: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787.aspx

Have you considered using SQL as your backend instead of SharePoint?  Once you get into the hundreds of fields your form will not scale much further unless you switch out your backend.

Thank you for your response! I am up for it or at least looking into it!

How hard is it?  Could you point me in the right direction on how to do that?
