Can I change the server path in my existing Word Document Information Panels

I have a number of custom document information panels which I published to our SharePoint site on our SBS 2011 server. We have now upgraded our server so the original SharePoint site no longer exists. So now, if I open any document which links to the old SharePoint server, have to click through at least four prompts before Word stops complaining! It is driving me mad! So I have two issues. What can I do about the existing documents to stop the incessant prompts for Smart Cards etc, and what can I do to update the template for new documents? I have managed to create some new DIPs which now refer to the new SharePoint server / site, but I can't seem to edit the existing Word documents to simply update the SharePoint link. I realise I can completely delete the XML data from the Word document, but then I will presumably lose all the data stored in them (some of which is important). Is there any way of either redirecting the SharePoint references to the new site (I am using identical site columns etc.), or updating the existing Word documents to refer to the new site. Sorry if this is a naïve question but I spent half of Saturday searching for an answer and couldn't find one. Thanks, Andrew

Yikes. This sounds awful, and I'm afraid I have almost no experience with DIPs. Can you attach a sample Word doc that has the issue? Under Options in a reply - or if you have concerns about posting confidential info, just email me via the forum & I'll reply & you can email it to me. :)

Hilary Thanks for the reply. I have had to zip the file as it won't allow me to upload a .dotx file. But it is not confidential - it is just a template. I have never tried opening one of these files on a computer outside our system, but I presume it will exhibit the same behaviour on your computer as it is doing on ours. Thanks, Andrew

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was wondering about seeing one of the existing Word docs created from the template, as you'd said: I can't seem to edit the existing Word documents to simply update the SharePoint link

Hilary Not sure what difference it makes in terms of accessing the XML, but here is a .docx file created from one of the templates. I suppose that for new documents, I can just re-create the templates, so I don't need to edit the XML of the templates. But presumably, if it is possible to do so, the process would be the same for both the template and the .docx file. Regards, Andrew

I'm just confused, that's all. :) I don't get any prompts at all when I open the template or the document. I go to the properties and can fill out the Project Title & Project Number, and everything seems to work as intended.

That is really strange. When I open the Blank Report document in Word 2007, I get a string of dialogs / errors before I can actually access the document. I have created two files showing them - I will have to attach them to two separate posts as it will only allow me to add up to 500K per post.

I am just wondering if you are using a later version of Word? I gather DIP functionality was discontinued in 2013 / 2016, so if you do not have the functionality, maybe Word just ignores all the associated data? (Second file attached to this post)

Yup, I'm using 2016. I saw a place to enter some project info on the properties for the doc, so I was guessing that was the info being entered in the DIP (like I said, I'm not familiar with these). See screenshot.

Re: Can I change the server path in my existing Word Document Information Panels

That's interesting. They are the custom fields I want to use. So it looks like it has broken the link between the document and the Sharepoint site. If I could achieve the same thing, it would be fine - even in Word 2007, the properties / fields are available even if the Sharepoint site is not. The problem is the 5 or 6 dialogs I have to get through when I open any document before I can start to use it. Andrew
