I have the same problem.... did you find a solution? I've spent all day transversing out of date examples and blogs simply because SP2007 isnt backward compatible.... i.e with the text strings and [me] I hate this product so much 

Hi, Another newbie question here. In my sharepoint view I want to use the [Me] filter. However Ive noticed it only works if the field you are filtering against is a proper name type field such as Created By, Modified By. My Manager field is a text string... How can I convert it to type 'name' if such a type exists? Thanks!
