Yeah I know! It just occured to me that a different browser would probably fix the problem. I'm a bit embarassed I didn't think of it earlier though... Thanks to everyone who helped!

Haha! Of course this email arrives the day after I find a work-around for the problem! John you are absolutely correct on every suggestion. In order to fix the problem I did the following:
Made SharePoint email my Outlook inbox
Created a contact in Active Directory for the external email account that I needed it to ...
