     Correct,   if q1 = yes, then q1a must contain details.

    its a InfoPath form on a SharePoint list, so what i'm trying to send has no bound fields. does that pose a problem?   I also have to be careful of the content I send out. might I send it to you in an email?

     ok so I added the rule to the required field,    if the previous field = yes, the validation rule is applied. if I don't put something into screentip field under the rule, I wont get the prompt. when I do put something in the screen tip field, I will get the prompt for a validation error, but nothing satisfies ...

    So I have a form that has 4 questions with a yes or no answer. If a question is answered as yes, a sub question asking for detail will appear.
