It's definitely done by rules. The Stop processing box is checked. My rule says: Condition - If Field A is present Action: Set a field's value Current Field Fromula - Corresponding field from SP list, filtered by Field A matching Field AB in SP list. Make sense?

Ernesto, I mis-spoke in my original post, it isn't the look up fields that are blank my dropdown lists work when submitting as an attachment.  It is the ones that have been auto populated in a repeating section from a SharePoint list.  I tried creating an Approval view with a repeating section that houses corresponding fields then ...
