it's set to fire a rule first (which adds text to the hidden text control i mentioned) then submit to a form library.  I have them set to only when neccessary right now, but that's what makes the "You have made changes to the form that have not been processed..." error pop up.

yeah, if any field on the form has changed, it will post that message.   Like I said, if I change all the controls to post back "always", it won't, because the latest data for each control will have already posted back.  But this is VERY slow.
