found the answer on this. I hadnt noticed the filters option on the rule, using this i could then type the expression that i wanted.

Hi, simple question i hope.  I am trying to create a rule on a field that looks up data from other fields. The rule will be run when an item in a field changes. The syntax of the formula would be something like this. fieldA=count(secondary)fieldA, where (secondary)fieldB = fieldB
