Hi Hilary, I know this is a very old post but I have the same issue in the new version Infopath 2010.
I'm using like you say udcx connections and relative url.
the problem is that in manifest.xml infopad save the "relative" url like this: /first sub site/myrealsubsite and the put rootSitecolection tag ...
