I've got the same problem and come to the conclusion that this function just isn't supported in Infopath 2003. If you create the form in Infopath 2007 then users with 2003 will not be able to access the form - i've tried that too.

I'm trying to set up a simple infopath template that has a data connection to an employee listing on Sharepoint.
