The re-link option only shows 4 forms, and they are of the new template recently uploaded. The old form template is still on the site, but hidden in the menu.  Does the old form (content type) have to be deleted from the library first?  Will I lose data that way?

Yep, and that is what I am trying to do, but it will not save the changes.  I have two rules on my submit, the first looks to see if it is a new form, the second if it is just changes... but it doesn't save the changes.

Unfortunately, we can't do it that way.  The name, since it is using the ID, can't be set until it is submitted.  Otherwise, we get CRF's that clash if two people are working in the system at the same time.   That being said, the naming isn't the issue... I am more trying to allow people to save their changes ...

 Sure.  It is just a test form.  No real structure as far as production would look... but it has what I am trying to do on it.
