Well, let's see if i have this correct.
You have a completely blank/Empty/plain form in design mode that you want to preview?
If I am correct, then my first question is; Why would you want to look at a form that is completely blank in Design and Preview?
To explain, the design mode, bizarrely, is where you make changes to the form from a ...

OK, got it.
So you are promoting this field to SharePoint? When you set up the submit to SharePoint data connection you can pick fields that will be added to your SharePoint list data. Then if you use Modify Settings and Columns and Create a New View you should be able to see this authorizers field listed. So then you can make a ...

What you want to do is create a submit button for your form instead of having them ad hoc save it. You can go to tools and submit options to see all the features. You would need to set up a dataconnection to ...

Yes, thats correct.
If I move the old template, 'archive' it. will the XML file still be able to find it? or will i have to keep it in the same location?
Does that also mean that each template i publish needs a new name? or can i just rename the old ones?
Ideally I would always want the current form to have the same name. ...

I think what you are saying is that you want to update the template of the form without it affecting previous documents. A tenant of InfoPath is that each document or XML has a reference to a template which is used to interpret and display the xml data. So naturally an old xml file will still look to reference the template it was ...
