Take the Expression box instead of text box and put the condition just like the condition put in the drop down. You will get the result what ever you want.

We are developing forms in infopath 2007. One of requirement says that a textbox should be limited to 40 characters and a message should be displayed about the number of characters that are left to be utilized in that textbox. Yes the promoted properties cannot be changed in SharePoint they just display what is in the form.
Now does the Workflow ID and other fields get assigned in the form? Or do you want them to be modified by some external process? You are pretty much stuck editing these fields within the form.
