I am abandoning this method for now - I notice that in filler, I can export to excel - but I was wondering can I export just the repeating table to an excel document with rules or a button click? The end goal is to have the repeating table exported to excel

I think the issue may just be too many interactions between fields here - I'd suggest adding a helper field that sets things instead of using defaults. So, add additional fields to your repeating data source (they don't have to show on the form) and put rules on the helper fields to set your other fields, instead of using defaults. ...

This should be fine with InfoPath and you don't have to have SharePoint. From the InfoPath Designer, under New, you can select "Database" as your starting point for your form - this will allow you to connect to your database.
