This is just not going to be possible in SharePoint Online with InfoPath. Perhaps investigate PowerApps? See if it may have the functionality you need?

Ouch. Do you only have one list form that is customized in InfoPath? Server all up to date on its patches? I think I would start by customizing a test list form and see if it repros on another list. Oh - and does this occur for all users? Or only specific users?

Oh, maybe? I'd probably keep my pictures in a picture library that I knew everyone could access, add a picture control that uses a link, then set the link. You could have metadata in the pics library and use a secondary data connection to it in order to dynamically get the right pic, so you don't have to have a ton of rules. Here's a ...

Hi, I'm confused, as usual. :) I would personally just have a rule on the field that the dropdown is bound to that has the condition "field is equal to" whatever the value is you need to run the rule for.

Sure - you need to count the rows in the secondary data source. :) So - your multi-select uses a secondary data source, right? Your expression to count all is just to use the count function on the repeating group that you use for the multi-select's options. Attach your form to a reply (under the options tab) if you need a hand.
