Use the Build Dynamic String action in SPD, then paste a FULL URL (the one you pasted is not a full URL - they are much longer). Replace the part of the URL that references the ID of the form with a Lookup to Current Item > ID. This will set the dynamic URL to a variable that you can then use anywhere you want, such as in the body ...

Yes, the toolbar is configurable in the Form Options on the Browser tab. I, too, remove all of these except for Print (and sometimes Close), because I prefer to make my own custom (not code, just configured) Submit buttons. I also like to dynamically create the filename for the user upon clicking my custom submit button. If you ...

userName() doesn't pull first or last name - it pulls the actual username. You can then pass this username to the User Profile Web Service to return the PreferredName, which shows up in the form of "Last Name, First Name." Or, you can just pull the first name and last name separately to put in whatever order you want.

Peter,
The hyperlink needs to be the full Forms Server URL (retrieve this by clicking on the doc within the form library and looking at the URL while the form is open in the browser). You can dynamically create Form URLs within SPD, because the full URL is always the same except for the ID, which is an easy reference for making sure you ...

YOu don't have to use an image for an asterisk - it's just shift-8 and is very easy. This method also keeps the user from getting an error post-submission, which can be very disconcerting to a normal user, because it's not obvious what the error is nor what to do to fix it. I prefer to take care of it all within the form ...

You shouldn't need a rule to tell it to query after opening. It should automatically query the DB and any other data connection automatically upon opening it. Did you not check that box on your data connection maybe? I don't use IP2003, so it's possible that it's just different.

Interesting, I never use the actual "Submit" function but rather the "Rules and Custom Code" then re-label the button as "Submit," so I've never noticed this discrepancy...

Grobinson,
Since the vast majority of my forms are browser-enabled, and since both the "Cannot be Blank" and Data Validation messages are extremely annoying in browser mode, I don't use either. What I use is a back-end validation method that uses conditional formatting to disable my submit button until all required fields are ...

Do you need to use code for this? It's a built-in feature with a checkbox on the Browser tab of the Form Options menu. If your form is not browser-enabled, I would think you could add a Refresh rule to your Submit "button" that refreshes any or all data connections before the submit action itself.

Submitting the data from the form to the DB is much more difficult than just displaying data in the from from a DB. What happens when you try it? You create the form using the Database template and tie the main data source to the DB connection. You then either just show the entire data set by dragging from the data source ...
