The formula on field8 is a victim of a sloppy copy / paste error. :-)
Should be:
0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field7)
as you suspected...
So much will have to do with the correct XPath for your fields. Can you right click each of them in the data source task pane, and select Copy XPath and paste the XPath into a reply?

You bet - if you have trouble implementing this in your form, you can always attach your form under the Options tab and I can give you a hand.

What I am trying to say is that you can just use the Hours_Total field. I'm attaching a sample. Save the file locally. Right click the saved file. Select Design, this will open the template in design mode.

Are these actual fields with formulas? You can just use the fields themselves - the expression will only consider their current values (it doesn't care how the values get there). Does that make sense?
If they are expression boxes, you can use the formulas:
40 != sum(XPath to Absence fields) + sum(XPath to Hours fields)

Try this blog post? Although - it does sound as if the author is having a different experience than you are....

Well, the formula will depend on the XPath to the fields.
What I usually do when I need to create a condition that is sort of outside the scope of the drop downs in the condition builder is leave the first drop down to whatever it is defaulted to, and the second it's default (usually, the first would be the field you are setting the ...

Hi - the tutorial you mention involves using our product, qRules - if you aren't using that, I'd imagine the tutorial would not be helpful.
You can use OData, if you are using SharePoint 2010. REST is not the same as using owssvr.dll. You'll want to use REST connections to the OData service.
Here's a video I put ...

You could use custom validation for this - add validation to the Total Hours Worked and the Total Absences fields that is triggered if the two added together is not equal to 40.
You could also just use rules on your submit - have the condition be if the two fields don't equal 40 to display a message box (filler only - we don't have ...

Are you entering a value in the field that is causing the validation issue? Is the field displayed on your form?

I didn't realize it was a browser form - I see some asst'd posts and code snippets online for closing a browser based form - but it may be simpler to just have your code set a field that has the rule on it to close the form... Then, when the code is complete, it sets a field's value, that field has the close rule - does that make sense?
