I've been able to have the user select a job number which automatically populates the job title and work location fields for a job app form. In this scenario, the user has to remember what the specific job number is for the position they're applying for. To make this easier, I tried a calculated field in SharePoint to combine the job ...

You are selecting the fields you want to promote in InfoPath Design mode right? Tools->Form Options-> Property Promotion? None are promoted by default.
Also you have created a new Outlook folder which is the InfoPath Form Items Type?
You would need to republish to update.

I believe this is due to the order in which rules and onload code runs.
All you have to do is add a rule on open that does the submit and you will have it. I have done this several times with SharePoint and never had an issue with submiting.
Then you can also have a rule which runs the query for the date and populates a field or whatever.

Do you want to hide the whole repeating section or just certain iterations? You do not have to have a repeating table within a repeating section.
You can put all of it inside a non repeating section or scrolling section if that is what you need.

The repeating table is within a repeating section. Can I just add a section and add the repeating table in the section?
-
On Repeating tables the conditional formatting hides the rows not the headers.
Put your repeating table inside of another section and then put the conditinoal formatting on the container section. This will hide everything.
