There are sevral ways to do this but one that is easy and pretty effective is to create a repeating group in your main data source and use it to create a repeating table or section. Place a drop down on the ID or contact name which gets its values from the SharePoint data.

So is this happening on new records or modifying an existing record or both? The record look up is working fine? You are getting all of the data?
When you view the data connections does it say both receive and submit? That is one clue if the submit is broken but I believe you would not get this error.

So you have created a InfoPath from from scratch as a database type? Are you referring to querying the data, to see it in the form or submitting it, after you change it in the form, back to the database?
These two tables must be related with primary keys or you would not be able to submit them.
