Strange, I didn't have any issue at all with how I described it. The rule is only supposed to fire after the id value updates. This rule then increments the seed (after the update). The id value is a "default value formula" and not a rule. And it is set to not update when the caclulation changes.

Unfortunately I don't think you can use environment variables in your paths to data sources that are based off XML files.
One workaround would be to make your dynamic data available through a web service but this might not be applicable to your scenario.

viperay, I believe the problem you are experiencing may be related to you having installed VS 2008 or more precisely .NET runtime 3.5. I think there is a bug there which breaks InfoPath solutions. There should be a hotfix for it eventually but for now your best bet is to make the solution full-trust. Let me know if this temporary workaround fixes ...
