What I typically do is add a flag field to my repeating data.
Set the flag empty or it could be a boolean and false.
Since your button is bound with each row a set field action when it is selected will set the flag to a value for the current row.
Then you can use the filter [flag=true] whenever you want to reference that row from outside ...

Thanks for the reply Pat, but that won't work. When I update the template I will save it to the SharePoint server as a different name. This is so that, if it is signed, the form will open properly with the old template (see this thread for why). So the form will be opened from a template that doesn't know it is ...

Are you running InfoPath 2007? One quick thing to check: do you have SP1? If not, there is a known error where you will get security error.

Then, you can insert the missing fields, or modify the XML before it validates the form. Here's an example from the SDK:
function ...

Hi Tom,
Thanks. We will think more about a way to create a control on SharePoint to suppor this. Unfortunately, because it isn't relational this is just hard.

Thanks, Patrick! There are rumours that we are going to upgrade to SharePoint 2007 soon, so I'm pretty excited.

If your users like your stuff then organize them to start lobbying IT to let you install some webservices on your SharePoint server. Then you could really be a hero with all of the powerful capabilities you could employ.
That is what you will need to get from highschool to your advanced degree ...
