Sounds like you are using managed code in a script file? What is the programming language you are set to use in the form? Form Options > Programming

What is a minimized state? What is the setting you are using on the one that is working? Sorry, just not familiar with this - or what you mean by minimized...

Okay, but you see, the thing is the underlying data type is an integer - that's why if you set the value to the ID, the error goes away. Instead of displaying the form field in the form, you could use a calculated value that shows the data you want based on the ID in the field. I think unless you find a way to report on the XML files themselves (and I am not seeing anything in a quick web search), you'd need to save the repeating data off to its own SharePoint lists - as you've seen, IP merges it (or sums it, or selects first or last) when promoted.  

Will the form open if not previewed? That is, if you double click on the xsn or the xsf, does the form open? Is the form set to preview with a data file that may no longer be present? Under Tools / Form Options / Preview.

Save this locally then right click and select design - I added notes to the form itself.
