Well, it may be a good plan to just start with one issue at a time. It sounds like you are having a problem with XPath filters. What example are you referring to? You can attach a form under the Options tab if you'd lke someone to help with the filters.

Hi - is your text field set via a rule on the field bound to the drop down? Or is it a default value?
If your text field is a default value, and the current value in the dropdown is no longer a valid selection (now that your drop down uses "List B" for its entries instead of "List A") that might explain the behavior.

You should be able to open the XSL with a text editor. Make changes and save. Then right click manifest.xsf and select design to try to open in Design mode. If it opens, you can use File --> Save As to pack it back up as an XSN.

Yeah, a lot of times I change the first drop down to "The expression" and sort of put my own XPath together, because my brain requires lots of parentheses to understand this stuff. In general, I assume that if I use an "OR" condition in IP, I have to make sure I have an entire expression on each side of it. We include the ...

Right click the template and select design, this will open it in design mode. From there, you can save it locally, and republish.

So, you need to add data validation to your Employee Number field - first, add a validation rule. The rule will have the following conditions:
Employee Number is blank
AND
Purposes is equal to Training
OR
Employee Number is blank
AND
Purposes is equal to Conference
