Update,
I have solved the problem. I had added a couple of attribute fields to the original form and forgotten to add them to the second form.
BTW the second form needs to have the signature groups/sub groups as per the original otherwise the merge will not happen.
It is still annoying that even with the Digital Signatures option ...

Hello:
This post from the InfoPath Team blog suggests using a symbol font to mimic this: http://blogs.msdn.com/infopath/archive/2005/01/11/350740.aspx as well as explaining why there is not a password control in InfoPath.

Hello Everyone. I have a password field that is attached to a database. I need to hide the contents and I was wondering if I could do it with stars or something like on a normal password input field. Is that possible? I've already tried making the text white but when you highlight it the text shows up in blue. ...

Thank you for posting your solution for others to see! I'm glad you were able to track down the problem. I found this post on the InfoPath team blog about floating point calculations that may explain the problem: http://blogs.msdn.com/infopath/archive/2008/04/17/invalid-data-error-when-calculating-the-result-of-2-or-more-fields.aspx

I compared the values that were causing the error with the values that had no error and found that the "errored" data had one more digit ...

I submit my form with an XML string to a web service. I would like to load (populate) the form from the same web service, which returns the XML string. Is there an easy way to do this? If I have to do a deep copy or something, how do I start?

Well, what you would be setting is the value of the field bound to the drop down list box, and yes, you can do that in code, but you can also use rules for this.
For example, on your Stock Number box, you can set a rule that if the field bound to the Stock Number box has a particular value, set the field bound to the Description to a particular ...

When you set up your submit, you have a place to enter the form name. You will need to make sure that the name of the form will be unique on submit -- I am guessing that the field you are using for the name of the form is not unique, it is the same each time. http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/5567/20910.aspx#20910 may help you with this.
