OK - I gave it a try and after resaving the entire form it says it cant open.
Now I admit I did a "replace all."
Any reason that would not work?

Right. But ddwrt namespace has such function as UrlEncode.
{ddwrt:UrlEncode(yourlink)}
In case if you'll need to replace something not url related in SPDesigner:
concat(substring-before($MyVar,' '),'MyMightyReplacedString',substring-after($MyVar,' '))

Sure. There is no way to do that in SharePoint designer. It does not provide even basic string.Replace functionality.

The items created with the form are fine and update as expected, but as will most real world applications, there is either pre-existing data or potential data coming from a external source.
